USA: Belden House & Mews, Litchfield, CT

A Historic Estate with a Modern Heart

I have visited Belden twice, including a slow lunch to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and it is a place I genuinely love. Touring the house and the Mews is a treat in itself, and afterward there is nothing better than wandering into town to take in Litchfield's fall color on foot. Autumn is the peak season here, and it is easy to see why.

Belden House & Mews brings grand hospitality back to the center of Litchfield, more than a century after the town's last great hotel was lost to fire. Set on a three-acre estate just steps from the Litchfield Green, the property pairs an 1888 Colonial Revival mansion with a 1959 modernist Mews, restored by Champalimaud Design with landscaping by Reed Hilderbrand. Ten rooms live in the main house, where the Grand Rooms feature fireplaces at the foot of the bed, while 21 garden-side rooms and suites in the Mews nod to the mid-century work of Marcel Breuer and Eliot Noyes. A three-bedroom Penthouse with a rooftop terrace and butler service crowns the collection.

Days here move at an unhurried pace. Culinary Director Vincent Gilberti, formerly of sister property Troutbeck, builds seasonal menus around Litchfield County farms and New England seafood, while a jewel-box bar pours regional spirits and afternoon tea is served in the historic house. The Bathhouse anchors the wellness side of the stay with a sauna, steam room, cold plunge, and Japanese Ofuro tub, and the lawn invites croquet, boules, and badminton. Recognized with a MICHELIN Key and a spot on Travel + Leisure's 2026 It List of best new resorts in the U.S., Belden feels both rooted in New England history and refreshingly current.
