Spain: Hotel Marqués de Riscal, Rioja
A Titanium Ribbon Over Vineyard Country
There is nothing quiet about the first glimpse of Hotel Marqués de Riscal. Frank Gehry's ribbons of pink, gold and silver titanium unfurl above the vines like a piece of jewelry set loose over the Rioja countryside, a jolt of contemporary architecture rising beside a winery that has been making wine since 1858. The hotel occupies the walled hilltop town of Elciego, its dramatic exterior giving way inside to interiors shaped by Gehry alongside Alvar Aalto furnishings, with sixty one rooms and suites spread across two buildings joined by a raised walkway, many opening onto views of the vineyards or the medieval rooftops below.
Days here move at the pace of the harvest calendar, whether or not it happens to be harvest season. Guests tour the historic Marqués de Riscal cellars, home to millions of aging bottles, then unwind at the Caudalie Vinothérapie spa, where grape and vine based treatments pair with a heated indoor pool, hammam, Finnish sauna and whirlpool. Bicycles are available for exploring the surrounding wine roads, and the region's Camino de Santiago route passes close enough for guests who want to fold a walk into their stay. In the evenings, the estate's own restaurants take over, from a Michelin starred tasting menu overseen with guidance from chef Francis Paniego to a more relaxed spot for regional plates and local Rioja pours.
