Spain: La Residencia, Mallorca
Old World Romance in Mallorca's Artists' Village
Tucked into the terraced hillsides above the village of Deià, La Residencia unfolds across two 16th century manor houses set among acres of citrus groves, olive trees, and gardens that climb toward the Tramuntana Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage range that frames nearly every view. This was Mallorca's original luxury hotel, opened in 1984 and once co-owned by Richard Branson, and it still carries that same sense of having been discovered rather than built. Rooms and suites are individually decorated with antiques, hand painted tiles, and original artwork, more akin to a scholar's countryside residence than a conventional hotel room, with private terraces that look out over the sea or the mountains.
Deià itself has drawn writers, painters, and musicians for a century, most famously the poet Robert Graves, who lived here for fifty years, and that creative pulse runs through the property. A resident art collection, sculpture garden, and on-site studio hosting guest artists give the hotel a lived-in cultural depth, while donkey treks through the olive groves, guided hikes into the Tramuntana peaks, and a twenty minute walk down to a secluded cove keep days outdoors. In 2025, the hotel unveiled the fully reimagined Villa Robert Graves, a three-bedroom private villa in the heart of the village designed by Studio Ashby, its dining room mural inspired by the poet's own verse.

Why La Residencia, Why Deià
One of the original grand hotels of Mallorca, with a history and sense of place few properties can match
A genuinely artistic setting, from resident painters to a poet's namesake villa, in a village that has drawn creatives for generations
Mountain and sea scenery in equal measure, with the Tramuntana range as a daily backdrop
A newly renovated private villa option for families or small groups who want the hotel's service with more space and privacy
Deià's slower, more residential pace, a contrast to Mallorca's busier resort towns
Ideal For: Couples and design-minded travelers drawn to old world romance and artistic heritage, and families or small groups who want a private villa with full access to the hotel's restaurants and spa.
