Post Ranch Inn does not sit on the Big Sur coastline so much as disappear into it. Mickey Muennig's architecture, in place since the inn opened in 1992, was built on the principle that the buildings should defer to the ridge rather than announce themselves on it. The Ocean Houses wear living roofs of grass and wildflowers. The Coast and Mountain Houses are circular, echoing the redwoods around them. The Tree Houses stand on stilts among the branches, triangular, with a skylight positioned over the bed. From Highway 1 you would barely know the place is there, which is the entire idea.

There are only forty rooms and private houses across the property, none with a television or an alarm clock, most with a wood-burning fireplace and a soaking tub angled at the water.
