A Highland Coaching Inn, Rebuilt as a Work of Art

The Fife Arms should not work as well as it does. A Victorian coaching inn in a small Cairngorms village, bought by Iwan and Manuela Wirth of Hauser & Wirth and reopened after a restoration that filled it with more than 16,000 paintings, antiques, and commissioned pieces. On paper it reads as an art-world project dropped into the Highlands. In practice it is warm, funny, deeply Scottish, and entirely of its place. There's a Lucian Freud on one wall and a Brueghel in the dining room, a neon red deer chandelier by Richard Jackson hanging in reception, and a drawing room ceiling hand-painted by Zhang Enli, and none of it feels like a gallery. It feels like the maddest and best country house you've ever been invited to.

The 47 rooms and suites are individually dedicated to Highland figures and landscapes, running from the Royal and Victoriana suites through Scottish Culture, Nature and Poetry, and Croft rooms, plus an Artist's Studio and a room the hotel simply calls the Secret Room. Dining spans the open-fire Clunie Dining Room, the village pub Flying Stag, Gordon's Tea Room, and a courtyard oyster and champagne hut, with Bertie's Whisky Bar holding a library of more than 500 whiskies arranged by flavor profile and Elsa's bringing Schiaparelli-inspired Art Deco cocktails to a village of 800 people. The hotel's ghillies, using the Gaelic term for a Highland attendant, run everything outdoors: Munro hikes, off-road expeditions, wild swimming in the Dee, stalking, fishing, and distillery visits. Balmoral Castle is nine miles up the road.
