Gleneagles opened in 1924 as a railway hotel with ambitions well beyond the railway, and it has spent the century since earning the nickname the Riviera of the Highlands. The setting does most of the work: 850 acres of Perthshire countryside, a long approach through parkland, and a limestone facade that still reads as a proper grand hotel rather than a country house pretending to be one. What keeps it interesting is that the scale never turns institutional.
