Greece: Myconian Ambassador, Mykonos

Quiet Luxury Above Platis Gialos

Myconian Ambassador sits on a hillside above Platis Gialos on Mykonos' south coast, surrounded by gardens and looking out over the Aegean. It's a Relais & Châteaux property and part of the family-run Myconian Collection, founded by George Daktylides and now run by his sons. The design is contemporary and Cycladic, with natural textures, whitewashed walls and private balconies facing the sea. Accommodations range from sea-view rooms and suites, many with a plunge pool or outdoor jacuzzi, to multi-bedroom villas, including an eight-bedroom villa with a private pool that sleeps up to 18.

I spent my first night in Mykonos here, and it was a calm place to land. I was upgraded to a room with a private pool. It wasn't heated, which is worth knowing if you're traveling early or late in the season, but the setting was lovely. The gym is one of the best I've seen at a Greek island hotel, with state-of-the-art equipment. The hotel is tucked into a quiet residential area, and you can walk down to the beach, where there are beach clubs to choose from. There's no complimentary shuttle into town, so plan on taxis or private transfers for evenings in Mykonos Town.
