Patricia Urquiola's Modernist Take on La Dolce Vita
Opened in 2016 in the small lakeside town of Torno, Il Sereno reimagines Lake Como through a distinctly contemporary lens. Designer Patricia Urquiola shaped nearly everything about the property, architecture, interiors, staff uniforms, even the hotel's own fleet of boats, drawing on postwar Italian glamour, Modernist design, and Como's own silk-making history. All 40 suites sit directly on the waterfront, with floor-to-ceiling windows, private furnished terraces, and sizes running from 65 square meters up to the 200-plus-square-meter Penthouse.
Ristorante Al Lago, the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, is led by chef Raffaele Lenzi and built around the lake's fresh fish alongside the cheese, meat, and wine of nearby Valtellina. The Urquiola-designed spa opens onto a 60-foot freshwater infinity pool suspended directly over the lake, finished in the same earthy grays, walnut, and blue-green tones that run through the rest of the property.
