UK: Claridge’s Maybourne, London
Mayfair's Grande Dame, Reimagined for Today
Claridge's has occupied its corner of Brook Street since the current Art Deco building rose in 1898, and walking through the black and white marbled foyer still feels like stepping into a different, more glamorous era. The space is anchored by a Dale Chihuly chandelier made of more than 800 hand blown glass pieces and, above it, a butterfly skylight designed by Damien Hirst, a pairing that sums up the hotel's whole approach: reverence for its history, paired with a willingness to keep evolving. Rooms and suites carry the same instinct, mixing original Victorian and Art Deco detailing with contemporary comfort, and no two are quite alike.
That balance of old and new continues throughout the hotel. The Painter's Room bar is wrapped in murals by artist Annie Morris, while The Fumoir keeps things intimate with dark wood, eggplant velvet banquettes, and a serious cocktail list. Claridge's biggest recent moment came in 2026, when New York's beloved Dante, the century old Greenwich Village institution known for its martinis and easy, clubby energy, took over the hotel's main restaurant space as a permanent fixture, bringing Italian-Australian cooking, live music, and a proper Martini hour to Mayfair. Beneath it all, a seven year renovation project from designer André Fu delivered a serene, Asian-inflected spa with a nine meter indoor pool, a pink onyx hammam, and treatments that begin with a foot ritual and end with a cup of custom blended tea.
